Embracing Linux: A Year-Long Journey into the Open-Source World
I have been using linux for the past one year as my only operating system. In this blog I will share my experince using linux. Using linux is and exciting journey for me over the past year. During this time, I have tried various Linux distributions and found a few that I used for an extended period and would highly recommend to others. These include Nobara OS, Pop!_OS, and Endeavour OS. Among them, I particularly recommend using Nobara OS due to its standout features and capabilities.
Working With Documents
As a college student, I have had to submit my records and assignments. Previously, I used MS Word to work with text documents. After transitioning to Linux, I tried Libre Office for a while. However, when I switched to Nobara OS, I started using Only Office, which has now become my go-to application for working with sheets and documents.
I also use Google Docs often since it is hosted in the cloud, allowing me to edit my documents on both lab systems and my laptop.
Programming
I am a computer science student, and coding takes up most of my time. When it comes to coding, I find that Linux provides an excellent development environment. I rely on VScode as my primary code editor for personal projects, and for college assignments, I often utilize online code editors such as Replit.
Media
I use the trusty VLC media player as my go-to video player, and for music, I enjoy using Rhythmbox. Additionally, PulseAudio comes in handy for enhancing the audio quality on my laptop.
Editing
When it comes to video editing, I find that Kdenlive is a great tool for the job. It provides a user-friendly interface and a range of features for editing videos. For photo editing, I prefer using GIMP, which is a powerful open-source image editing software with a wide array of tools and capabilities. Both Kdenlive and GIMP are reliable options for editing videos and photos, respectively.
Here are some other applications that I use on a day-to-day basis and recommend to you.
- Obsidian (Taking Notes)
- Virtaul Box (Virtualization)
- OBS (Streaming)
Advantages of Using Linux
- I saved the money I would have spent on proprietary software and antivirus.
- Becoming proficient in using the command line.
- Battery life is increased when compared to Windows.
- Increase in overall performace of the laptop
and the list goes on.
